What is reaction time?

Reaction time is the interval between a stimulus appearing and your response to it. On this site we measure simple visual reaction time — how quickly you can click, tap, or press a key after a panel turns green. It's measured in milliseconds (ms).

What is a good reaction time?

On browser-based visual tests, many people fall between 200 and 300 ms. Under 200 ms is very fast. But 'good' is personal — hardware, input device and focus all shift your numbers, so the most useful comparison is against your own past results.

How reaction time is measured

We use the browser's high-resolution timer (performance.now). When the signal appears we record a start timestamp; when you respond we record the difference. Randomized delays prevent you from anticipating the signal. We run five rounds and report both average and median.

Why reaction time changes

Attention, fatigue, caffeine, time of day, and even screen refresh rate all influence your result. This is normal. Running multiple attempts and looking at the median smooths out one-off flukes.

Reaction time vs reflexes

A reflex is an automatic, involuntary response (like a knee-jerk). Reaction time involves perceiving a stimulus and choosing to respond. The tests here measure voluntary reaction, not true reflexes.

Visual vs auditory reaction time

How gaming affects reaction performance

Regular practice with fast, reactive tasks can improve how quickly you respond on those specific tasks. We avoid claiming this makes you a 'better gamer' — it simply reflects practice on reaction-style tasks.

Why hardware affects online reaction tests

Your monitor's refresh rate, input device latency, and browser all add small delays that are counted in your result. That's why you shouldn't directly compare scores across very different devices.
